Privacy Policy

Plain English about what information Gary collects, why, who sees it, and the rights you have. We only ask for what we need to answer your enquiry and do the job.

Who we are

Handyman Gary is a local handyman service covering Warrington, Knutsford, Stockton Heath, Latchford and the surrounding areas. Where this policy says "we", "us" or "Gary", it means Handyman Gary.

We are the data controller for the personal information you share with us. That means we are responsible for looking after it and for telling you how it is used.

This policy explains what we collect, why we use it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and your rights under UK data protection law (the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018).

What information we collect

We only collect what we need to answer your enquiry and do the work. Usually that is:

  • Your name.
  • Your contact details: phone number, WhatsApp number and email address.
  • The address where the work is needed.
  • Details of the job, including any photos you choose to send.
  • Messages between you and Gary.
  • What we need to be paid, such as a bank transfer reference. We do not store card numbers.

Please do not send us sensitive information (such as health details or full bank account access). We do not need it and do not ask for it.

How we collect it

We collect this information directly from you, when you:

  • Message Gary on WhatsApp.
  • Email us.
  • Talk to Gary in person about a job.

The website itself has no contact form and does not ask you to type in any details. The "Get a quote" and "Ask Gary" buttons simply open WhatsApp with a message ready for you to send.

Why we use your information, and our legal basis

UK data protection law says we must have a valid reason (a "lawful basis") for using your information. Ours are:

  • To reply to your enquiry and give you a quote. Taking steps at your request before any contract, and our legitimate interest in responding to people who get in touch.
  • To carry out the work you have booked. Performing our contract with you.
  • To arrange visits, confirm bookings and keep you updated. Performing our contract, and our legitimate interest in running the service well.
  • To take payment and keep proper business and tax records. Performing our contract, and meeting our legal obligations (for example records HMRC requires).
  • To deal with any question, complaint or insurance matter about a job. Our legitimate interest in sorting out issues and protecting our position.
  • To send you marketing, only if you have asked us to or clearly agreed. Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

Booking and enquiry tools

To keep enquiries and bookings organised, Gary uses a booking and answering service called JMAC Answer, together with simple booking tools. Where these handle your information, they do so on Gary's instructions and only to help manage your enquiry and booking. They are not allowed to use your information for their own purposes.

WhatsApp and messaging

If you contact Gary through WhatsApp, your messages are also handled by WhatsApp (owned by Meta) under their own privacy terms, which we do not control. WhatsApp messages are encrypted between you and us. If you would rather not use WhatsApp, you can email instead.

Who we share your information with

We do not sell your information, and we never share it for anyone else's marketing. We share it only where it is needed to run the service:

  • Our booking and answering service (JMAC Answer) and booking tools, as above.
  • Our email and website hosting provider, which stores the emails you send us.
  • Suppliers, only where strictly needed to complete a job (for example ordering a specific part), and only the minimum needed.
  • Professional advisers, or authorities such as HMRC, where the law requires it.

Some providers (for example WhatsApp and Meta) may process information on servers outside the United Kingdom. Where that happens, your information stays protected by safeguards recognised under UK data protection law.

How long we keep it

  • Enquiries that do not turn into a job: normally kept for up to 12 months in case you get back in touch, then deleted.
  • Records of jobs we have done (quotes, invoices and payment records): kept for up to 6 years after the work, to meet tax and accounting rules and in case of any later query or claim.
  • Marketing consents: kept until you withdraw them.

We delete or anonymise information once we no longer need it.

Cookies and the website

Our website is deliberately simple. At present it does not set its own cookies and does not run website analytics or tracking.

We may in future use advertising or analytics tools (for example a Facebook or Meta advertising tag) to see how well our adverts work. If we do, we will ask for your consent first through a cookie banner, and update this policy before any such tracking is switched on.

Keeping your information safe

We take reasonable steps to keep your information secure. The website uses a secure (HTTPS) connection, and access to your details is limited to Gary and the booking service helping with your enquiry.

Children

Our service is for adults arranging work on their property. We do not knowingly collect information about children.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

  • Ask for a copy of the information we hold about you.
  • Ask us to correct anything that is wrong.
  • Ask us to delete your information, where there is no good reason to keep it.
  • Ask us to restrict or object to how we use it.
  • Ask us to transfer your information to you or another provider, where that applies.
  • Withdraw your consent at any time, where we relied on your consent.

To use any of these rights, just contact us using the details at the top of this page. We will respond within one month, and there is normally no charge.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK regulator for data protection:
